Fundamentals of Literature – English 1 – gr 9+

Description:  With the Fundamentals of Literature textbook, we shall focus on learning the fundamentals of literature–conflict, character, theme, structure, point of view, and moral tone. Our studies will includes contemporary and classic American, British, and world authors in four genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. Critical thinking skills are encouraged throughout the text through discussion questions. Concepts and literary works are analyzed using scriptural applications.

Grammatical concepts will be studied and implemented in the students’ writing throughout the year.  The students will study how to write properly structured sentences and paragraphs then demonstrate their proficiency by writing  a five paragraph essay.
The study of literary fundamentals will be reinforced through the reading and discussion of the novels The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Frankenstein. Please note that in order to make class discussion easier, the instructor will purchase the same edition of
each novel for the students. The cost of the two novels is included in the material fees.
