Supplies: BJU Press English Student Text Grade 9 3^rd  Ed. ISBN 978-1-60682-239-5; spiral notebook; writing utensil; **access to a computer and the internet at home for some of the reading, writing, and vocabulary assignments.

Materials fee: $25 per student for books

This course will focus on reading and writing to lay a solid foundation for future English classes. We will target communicating and writing effectively building on students’ prior knowledge of grammar and mechanics and addressing any gaps which they may have. Specifically, students will sharpen paragraph and essay writing. Additionally, we will review logical fallacies and practice recognizing and developing strong logical arguments through analysis of reading selections. Throughout the course, we will survey various genres of literature, such as short stories, novels, nonfiction and poetry as students learn textual elements of genres, author’s purpose, tone, plot structure, symbolism, characterization, and theme.
