Teacher Bios

Trish Cowan

Trish Cowan has been teaching in various capacities for 33 years, which includes teaching English at a court reporting college, homeschooling her 4 children for 18 years, and teaching at a homeschool co-op for 5 years. For the past 8 years, Trish has taught
middle school and high school English at Poetry Community Christian School.

Dana Geerts

Dana Geerts has dedicated herself to homeschooling her four children from 2007-2023. The curriculum she chose was ABEKA for its comprehensive and challenging academic standards. She has been blessed with the opportunities to use her skill set as bookkeeper, treasurer, board member, financial committee member, and small group teacher of a variety 501 (c)3 entities. Dana’s desire is to create “a love for learning” and challenge students to do hard things while offering assistance to achieve their goals.

Achini Mahawanniarachchi

Mrs. Achini Mahawanniarachchi has been homeschooling her three daughters for over ten years. She has been teaching biology and other sciences for more than fifteen years. After completing an undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, she followed her husband to the USA for higher studies. She also has a degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. Her passion for teaching science led her to obtain a Masters in Science Education and Curriculum Development. Achini believes that every student is unique and learning sciences will enhance students critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Shari Nelson

Shari Nelson had the privilege of home educating her 4 children using a variety of curriculums and homeschooling opportunities. For over 20 years, she has taught co-operative classes to homeschoolers, including Bible, math, language arts and science. Ms. Nelson was given the privilege of teaching various 7th grade math through Algebra 2, college & career, test prep, and Bible courses at Poetry Community Christian School for the last 9 years. She is looking forward to serving the homeschool community again. Shari received her BS, Interdisciplinary Studies in Education and Social Sciences at Liberty University in 2018. Ms. Nelson, then, completed her Guidance Counselor Certification in College Admission Counseling and Advising through the North American Coalition for Christian Admissions Professionals, Inc. and Anderson University, South Carolina in 2021.
